AI video often looks deceptively simple: type a prompt, wait, and download a finished clip. That can work for experiments, but dependable videos require more than generation. You still need a clear message, accurate claims, usable assets, consistent design, readable captions, clean audio, and a final review.
This is where Codex is useful. Think of Codex as your production coordinator. It can inspect your project files, organize source material, write and revise scripts, create storyboards, assemble a programmatic video, run rendering tools, and check the result. Specialist tools can provide generated clips, narration, encoding, or manual finishing.
You do not need to become a programmer. Your job is to make creative decisions, supply trustworthy materials, and approve each stage. Codex handles much of the technical work in the workspace.
Before You Start: Prepare Seven Inputs
Create one project folder and place your source material inside it. Then decide:
- Goal: What should the viewer understand or do?
- Audience: Who is the video for?
- Duration: For example, 30 or 60 seconds.
- Format: Landscape
16:9, vertical9:16, or square1:1. - Assets: Approved photos, footage, logos, product screenshots, and data.
- Brand rules: Colors, fonts, tone, logo use, and words to avoid.
- Factual boundaries: Claims that are verified, confidential, restricted, or uncertain.
Step 1: Ask Codex to Create the Production Brief
Start with a brief, not a request to “make a great video.” The brief becomes the reference for later choices and stops the project from drifting.
Copy this prompt into a new Codex task:
I want to create a [DURATION]-second [ASPECT_RATIO] video about [TOPIC]
for [AUDIENCE]. The primary goal is [GOAL], and the only call to action

Inspect the files in this workspace before proposing anything. Create a
concise production brief covering the core message, tone, required facts,
available assets, missing assets, brand constraints, delivery format, and
approval checkpoints. Do not invent facts or treat generated imagery as
evidence. List every assumption and unresolved risk. Save the brief as
production-brief.md, then summarize the decisions I need to approve.Review the brief yourself. Correct the audience, main message, claims, and call to action before continuing. One short video should normally make one promise and ask for one action.
Step 2: Turn the Brief into a Time-Bounded Script
A written paragraph is not automatically a video script. Spoken language needs breathing room, while on-screen text must be shorter than narration. Ask Codex to separate voiceover, visible text, and visual intent.
Using the approved production-brief.md, write a script for exactly
[DURATION] seconds. Use plain language for [AUDIENCE], one central idea,
and one CTA: [CTA].
Create a timing table with these columns: time range, narration, on-screen
text, visual purpose, and evidence source. Keep on-screen text concise.
Flag any sentence that depends on an unverified claim. Estimate the spoken
duration and revise the script until it fits naturally. Save the result as
script-v01.md. List assumptions and unresolved risks at the end.Read the script aloud with a timer. Remove unnecessary context before accelerating the voice. Approve the words first; otherwise every later edit becomes more expensive.
Step 3: Build a Storyboard and Shot List
The storyboard connects each line to a visible moment. It also reveals where you lack footage and where a simple graphic may communicate better than a generated cinematic shot.
Turn the approved script-v01.md into a shot-by-shot storyboard for a
[DURATION]-second [ASPECT_RATIO] video. For each shot include: shot ID,
start and end time, narration, on-screen text, visual description, asset
source, transition, and fallback option.
Use verified real footage or screenshots for factual claims. Use motion
graphics for numbers, labels, process explanations, and the CTA. Mark
generative visuals as illustrative and reserve them for low-fact-risk
moments. Inspect the workspace and reuse approved assets where possible.
Save the storyboard as storyboard-v01.md. Report missing assets,
assumptions, and unresolved rights or accuracy risks.Check for visual variety, logical pacing, and proof. Any real customer, location, result, or product capability needs a verified source—not merely a plausible image.
Step 4: Route Every Asset to the Right Tool
There is no reason to generate every frame. A practical hierarchy is:
- Real footage and screenshots for people, products, locations, and factual proof.
- Licensed stock for generic environments or actions.
- Motion graphics for text, comparisons, diagrams, numbers, and calls to action.
- Generated stills or clips for atmosphere, metaphor, or transitions that do not make factual claims.
Ask Codex to create an asset manifest before downloading or generating anything:
Review storyboard-v01.md and all media in the workspace. Create
asset-manifest.md with one row per shot: required asset, existing file,
source or owner, permission status, factual risk, chosen production route,
target dimensions, and fallback.
Choose among real media, licensed stock, motion graphics, generated image,
or generated video. Prefer the lowest-risk route that communicates the
idea clearly. Do not upload confidential material to third-party services.
Do not call a paid API or download media until I approve the manifest.
List assumptions, missing permissions, and unresolved risks.This approval gate protects your budget and your credibility. Generative video is powerful, but it is one source of shots—not the production system itself.
Step 5: Let Codex Assemble a Reproducible Video
For a reusable workflow, ask Codex to build the timeline in Remotion, which creates real video files from React-based compositions and supports agentic, interactive, and programmatic production. You can still direct the process in ordinary language.
Using the approved brief, script, storyboard, and asset manifest, create a
Remotion project for this [DURATION]-second [ASPECT_RATIO] video at 30 fps.
Implement one component per scene, use only approved assets, and centralize
colors, typography, spacing, caption style, and safe-area rules.
Match scene timing to the storyboard. Keep important text readable on a
phone and inside platform safe areas. Add temporary placeholders only for
assets explicitly marked missing, and label them visibly. Create a preview,
run the project checks, and tell me how to review it. Record assumptions
and unresolved risks; do not silently change approved claims or wording.Then request changes as creative directions: “Hold scene three for one more second,” “make the title calmer,” or “replace this visual with the approved product photo.” Codex can translate those decisions into project changes and render another review version.
Step 6: Add Narration, Music, and Captions
A human recording is often the most distinctive option. Text-to-speech can be useful when you need rapid drafts, multiple languages, or consistent delivery. In either case, confirm that you have permission to use the voice. Use only music with documented licensing.
Prepare the approved script for narration. Create a pronunciation list for
names, acronyms, and technical terms. If an approved voice recording exists,
clean and use it. Otherwise prepare a text-to-speech version for review,
without cloning or imitating any person unless written permission is present.
Generate synchronized captions from the final narration, keep caption lines
short, and place them inside the safe area. Add only music with a documented
license and keep speech intelligible. Update the Remotion project, render an
audio review version, and report duration, loudness concerns, assumptions,
and unresolved permission risks.Listen with headphones and a phone speaker. Check pronunciation, pace, caption timing, music balance, and the final half-second—where audio cuts are easy to miss.
Step 7: Render, Inspect, and Review the Final Export
Rendering is not approval. Codex can use FFmpeg and ffprobe to encode, convert, and inspect media, but a person must still watch the entire export.
Render the approved video to MP4 using the delivery requirements in
production-brief.md. Then inspect it with ffprobe and report duration,
resolution, frame rate, video codec, audio codec, sample rate, and file size.
Check for missing files, black frames, clipped text, unsafe caption placement,
audio ending early, and mismatch between the approved script and final edit.
Create qa-report.md with automated results and a separate human review
checklist for facts, branding, rights, visual continuity, captions, audio,
and CTA. Do not call the video final until I explicitly approve it.Watch the exported file, not only the preview. Review it once with sound, once muted for visual clarity, and once on the target device.

For most first projects, start with Codex + Remotion + FFmpeg. Add a generative service only for shots the storyboard actually needs. Add text-to-speech only if recorded narration is unavailable or unsuitable. Use DaVinci Resolve when the final polish benefits from hands-on editing.
Common Failure Modes
- Starting with a tool instead of a message: A spectacular clip cannot rescue an unclear purpose.
- Generating too much: Mixed styles and unstable details quickly make a video feel artificial.
- Treating plausible visuals as proof: Generated facilities, customers, interfaces, and results can mislead viewers.
- Approving the script too late: Timing, captions, narration, and scenes all depend on it.
- Ignoring the small screen: Thin fonts and long sentences may look fine on a desktop preview but fail on a phone.
- Losing rights information: Record the source and permission for every external image, clip, track, voice, logo, and likeness.

- The video has one audience, one message, and one CTA.
- Every factual claim has a trustworthy source.
- Every asset has a recorded source and permission status.
- Generated visuals are used only where they cannot misrepresent reality.

- Narration is understandable and music is licensed and balanced.
